The Fair Labor Standards Act is a law protects employees and makes sure they are fairly paid.  There are two important parts to this law:

1. Minimum wage- A covered nonexempt employee under the FLSA is entitled to receive a minimum of $7.25 per hour.  However, under Florida law this is increased to $8.10 per hour as of 2016.  This means that unless you are an exempt employee you are entitled to receive at least $8.10 for each hour worked.  
2. Overtime - A covered nonexempt employee must be paid overtime for any hour worked over 40 hours per work week.  Overtime pay is one and one-half times the regular pay.  Example:  If you are paid $10 per hour and work 50 hours per week.  You are entitled to $400 for the first forty hours worked, plus $15 per hour for the remaining 10 hours  Thus your total weekly pay should be $550.
